11,682 running for brgy polls

The Commission on Elections in Negros Oriental said 1,179 candidates for barangay captain and 10,503 for kagawad, or barangay council, have filed their certificates of candidacy for the October 28 elections.

In the Comelec records released yesterday, Dumaguete City, that has 30 barangays, has 62 candidates for barangay captain and 661 for kagawad.

In the first district, the number of those who filed for the positions of barangay captains and kagawads are as follows: Canlaon City, 21 and 212; Vallehermoso, 26 and 244; Guihulngan City, 69 and 634; La Libertad, 59 and 484; Jimalalud, 48 and 399; Tayasan, 62 and 492; Ayungon, 41 and 349; Bindoy 52 and 422 and Manjuyod, 59 and 487.

In the second district: Bais City, 82 and 732; Mabinay, 62 and 670; Pamplona, 30 and 282; Tanjay City, 65 and 535; Amlan, 17 and 137; San Jose, 32 and 289; Sibulan, 35 and 383; and Dumaguete City, 62 and 661;

In the third district: Valencia, 57 and 454; Bacong, 37 and 325; Dauin, 49 and 373; Zamboanguita, 23 and 189; Siaton, 59 and 483; Sta. Catalina, 48 and 429; Bayawan City, 64 and 642; and Basay, 20 and 196 candidates.

Negros Oriental has 557 barangays in six cities and 19 towns, and has 799,275 registered voters for the barangay polls, Comelec records show.*JFP
