Fire hits 2 houses
in Dumaguete

Fire of still unknown origin destroyed two houses at Dr. Meciano Road in Dumaguete at about 9:30 a.m. yesterday, and two residents were injured.

Fire investigators are investigating reports that the son of one of the victims intentionally set their house on fire. It was contained 15 minutes after the Fire Department responded to the alarm call at around 10 a.m.

Firefighters had a hard time accessing the densely populated area because of the narrow street.

The fire destroyed the two-storey house of Jiolinda Amores and damaged that of Leticia Amores Sun, who sustained first degree burns. Another resident, Adrian Amores, was treated for minor injuries.

Jiolinda’s son, Reynaldo Amores, who was missing during the incident, was accused by his family of setting the fire. They said he was a drug user and had previously attempted to burn their house, fire investigators said.

Damage has not yet been estimated, Senior Fire Officer 2 Quintino Dumala Jr. said.

The Fire Department was augmented by the Dumaguete City Rescue 348 team, and fire trucks from Dumaguete, Sibulan, Valencia, and the Chinese Volunteer fire brigade.*JFP
