Dumaguete City won four regional awards in the Gawad Saka search of the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas, and the winners will receive their trophies during the awarding ceremony at the Cebu Business Hotel in Cebu City Tuesday.

The winners are Jessie Ogahayon of Barangay Camanjac as Regional Outstanding Organic Farmer; Mr. and Mrs. Dante Fulmaran of Barangay Candau-ay, Regional Outstanding Farm Family; Excellent 4-H Club of Barangay Bajumpandan, Regional Outstanding Young Farmers; and, Philip Altamarino, agricultural technician of the Office of the City Agriculture of Dumaguete, Regional Outstanding Scientist.

They were recognized for utilizing organic technologies to produce agricultural products, livestock and crops, and the awards reflect the successful organic farming program of Dumaguete, City Administrator William Ablong, concurrent chief of the City Agriculture Office, said yesterday.

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Everything is set for the holding of the barangay elections Monday in the island-province of Siquijor, its provincial elections supervisor, Rafael Orillana, said yesterday.

Official ballots and other election paraphernalia have arrived and security measures are in place to ensure clean and peaceful polls, Orillana said.

He also said he hopes the polls in Siquijor will be orderly in spite of two barangays under close watch for potential intense political rivalry. He, however, refused to name the barangays.

NDF-Negros calls
for PDAF abolition

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The National Democratic Front in Negros Island yesterday called for the immediate abolition of the controversial Priority Development Fund and urged the government to re-channel it to basic social services that would benefit the people.

NDF spokesperson and former priest Frank Fernandez said in a statement he issued that the PDAF of President Benigno Aquino III must also be abolished.

Fernandez said the P25 billion pork barrel funds of the senators and congressmen is just a little amount compared to the PDAF of Aquino, which is about P1.3 to P1.5 trillion that he can utilize at his own discretion.
