Laguna bids to host
next year’s Palaro

After 100 years since the province last had its sporting event transformation in 1911, Laguna is bidding  to host the “Palarong Pambansa 2014” following a meeting with the Department of Education at the University of Life complex in Pasig City Thursday.

In a radio interview aired over DZJV, Laguna Provincial Sports Development Coordinating Office head,  Albert Abarquez,  expressed optimism over  the chances of the  province to host the national “Palaro” next year.

“We always pray and hope the blessing would be in Laguna and sports and education authorities can make the right decision to have this Olympic spirit and sports advocacy here,” Abarquez said.

He  explained that the concept for Laguna’s hosting is its renovated, improved and refurbished sports facilities for the various sporting events and games housed in one Laguna Sports Complex.

He said  the Sports Complex, as of this time, has almost 85  percent  of the playing fields improved as Laguna sports officials also mulled alternative sites like the use of sport facilities in UP Los Baños and the Trace College.

Abarquez also said  “We can literally bring the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship under one roof in line with the sports program of DepEd as we have considered billeting travel time would only be approximately 15 to 30 minutes to the sports venue.”

He  observed that,  based on the sporting delegation’s experience during the previous “Palarong Pambansa” where events are “scattered” in various sporting venues, their bid and proposals are to house the games and events in one sports complex.

“We pin our hopes and see brighter prospects for our chance and that hopefully they (DepEd) will make the right decision for the benefit of our athletes and young players and over-all sports improvement and development for the school youth,” Abarquez said.

He  said  the Laguna Sports Complex has two softball and two baseball fields, exclusive site for the archery range, swimming pool, four to five basketball courts, among other sporting venues.

He also said the Laguna Sports Complex offers and introduces for the first time a new experience for the “Palaro” athletes to hold evening games because of the state-of-the-art lighting facilities installed in the complex. *PNA
