Triple gold for JRU’s jumper
at 18th FilOil University Games

Harry Diones of Jose Rizal University secured his third gold medal yesterday as he ruled the men’s high jump a day after topping the men’s triple jump and long jump in the 18th FilOil – University Games at the University of St. La Salle Track Oval in Bacolod City.

Diones cleared the bar at 1.85m to secure the gold while Kristian Ahorro of De La Salle University settled for silver with his 1.75m mark. Diones teammate Christian Repe grabbed the bronze with his 1.70m leap.

The triple gold for JRU provided a diversion to the close race for the overall championshi p in athletics between Far Eastern University and University of Sto. Tomas.

UAAP, CESAFI squads spice
up q’ finals match-ups

All roads for sports followers lead to University of St. La Salle this weekend as the top teams in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. eye the final seats in men’s basketball and women’s volleyball.

Unigames defending champion and UAAP 76 Season semifinalist National University Bulldogs will face host USLS at 8 a.m. today in the second day of the quarterfinals of men’s basketball, followed by the match-up between University of Sto. Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University (Team A) in the second game at 9:30 a.m.

Cesafi’s champion University of Visayas will tackle fellow Cebu-based team University of San Carlos at 11a .m., while NOPSSCEA defending champion West Negros University Mustangs will play against Ateneo’s Team B at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played at the USLS Coliseum

Laguna bids to
host next year’s Palaro

After 100 years since the province last had its sporting event transformation in 1911, Laguna is bidding  to host the “Palarong Pambansa 2014” following a meeting with the Department of Education at the University of Life complex in Pasig City Thursday.

In a radio interview aired over DZJV, Laguna Provincial Sports Development Coordinating Office head,  Albert Abarquez,  expressed optimism over  the chances of the  province to host the national “Palaro” next year.

“We always pray and hope the blessing would be in Laguna and sports and education authorities can make the right decision to have this Olympic spirit and sports advocacy here,” Abarquez said.
