DA hit for rising prices of rice

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. Tuesday said that while prices of rice have increased slightly, he expects them to decrease with harvest season having started.

But the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas in a statement yesterday, assailed the Department of Agriculture for what it called, its “inaction and ineptitude on the continuing increases in the price of rice.”

“The price of rice is steadily increasing for almost two months now and the DA has done nothing to pull down, stabilize, and control prices,” KMP secretary general Antonio Flores said in their press release.

Flores insisted that last week’s report on the artificial palay shortage was obviously meant to justify rice price increases and massive rice importation.

He also claimed that artificial palay shortage and the rice price increases clearly demonstrate the manipulations by rice cartels to justify a massive and corruption-tainted rice importation policy, the press release added.*
