Bongbong and the SK

Ninfa Leonardia Oh, oh. What is this about the move at the Senate to postpone the election for the Sangguniang Kabataan? A bill has been filed by the son and heir of the unlamented President Ferdinand Marcos, who says that the SK election should not take place until amendments are made in the law creating it. I agree that there is need to make changes in that law, but I will forgive Bongbong Marcos and his family for a lot of their sins to the Filipino people if he amends that bill and makes it one that scraps the SK altogether.

One cannot blame Bongbong Marcos, now a senator, for wanting to fine-tune the selection of SK members and their functions. He must feel proprietarial towards it, since it was spawned out of the youth group once led by his sister. Imee, now governor of Ilocos Norte. I’m afraid I have forgotten the name of that infamous national youth organization that exercised a lot of power over the youth during the time of their parents. Bongbong’s measure, by the way, is called Senate Bill No. 1186. Let us see what the other senators think of it, I mean, those who are not busy thinking about how they will extricate themselves from the fall-out of the Pork Barrel scam.

But will the Senate have time to take up Bongbong’s SK bill if they succeed in having PDAF Queen Janet Lim Napoles brought to their august chamber to be interrogated by them? Me, I wonder why senators like to have questionable characters brought before them. One would think they had enough TV exposure when they were working on the impeachment of ex-Chief Justice Renato Corona. With so many accused VIPs using up their time, when do they get a chance to attend to lawmaking?

Meanwhile, wasn’t that Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, resplendent in a bright pink outfit speaking out at her colleagues suspected of involvement in the Pork Barrel scandal yesterday? Let them commit hara-kiri, she screeched. No sign of the chronic fatigue she is said to be suffering from, or did I just miss the symptoms? Ah, Miriam. The Senate will not be the same without you, so take care of those chronic matters and keep us entertained.

Poor Bonifacio Global City. It is now in the middle of the squabble between Makati and Taguig who both claim it belongs to them. Makati has now got an edge with the Court of Appeals having ruled that BGC belongs to it. But Taguig, headed by a mayor who is the wife of a senator, is not taking the CA decision meekly. It has filed for reconsideration at the CA, which is being laughed off by the lawyer of Makati, who says that will no longer work. BGC residents and businesses are in a quandary. Where will they ask for permits and licenses? Where will they pay taxes? By the way, the mayor of Makati is also the son of the Vice President. Quits?

Will U.S. President Barack Obama get his way? The latest is that he had almost succeeded in convincing Congress to his plan to initiate a strike against Syria. We know this stemmed from his outrage over the use of the chemical sarin, that had killed about 1,400 Syrians, many of them little children, in agonizing deaths. So far, France seems to be going along with Obama’s plan, but the Syrian Ambassador has come right out and called him a “bully”. Which is what he will appear to the world if he goes on with his idea of a solution without trying other means. Maybe he just wants to also have a major war in his record, since this is already his last term?

A 64-year old woman (who looks more like a man) fulfilled her lifetime dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida. She was guarded by some vessels ready to protect her from sharks or other perils of the sea, and landed with a terribly sunburned face, but triumphant, with full media coverage and worldwide attention. She even got congratulatory messages from President Obama, and Hillary Clinton. Can we say that she has been acknowledged by the incumbent and incoming Presidents?

Another woman in the news, only in the Philippines, that is, is the President’s so-called shooting buddy, who is now head of the Land Transportation Office. Ms. Virginia Torres was caught on a video by somebody at a casino, which is, of course prohibited for government officials. When she protested that she was only looking around and not gambling, another video came out, showing her actually inserting a card into a slot machine. Malacañang has washed its hands off the matter, and passed it on to the Department of Transportation and Communication, where she belongs. Will we see the denouement of his case.*
