Defending champion Bar 21/Seafood Island overpowered the previously unbeaten MKK/Doromal Seeds, 63-44, in the latest match-up of the Ayala Basketball Club 1st Conference Tournament at the ANP Basketball Court in Talisay City.
In taming MKK/Doromal, Bar 21 showed that good defense wins games as they bounced back from a lethargic first half and played with a different mindset in the final half to get away with the victory.
With Tad Caperonce and Philip Abong combing for 19 points, Bar 21/Seafood Island dominated MKK/Doromal seeds with a 25-4 run in the third quarter.
Brod Hojilla sealed the win for the defending champion as scored nine points in the fourth quarter.
He led Bar 21 with 17 points while Abong fiished with 12 points, Caperonce added 11, and Dante Ma with 9 points.
Tommy and Francis Andren had 12 and 10 points, respectively, for MKK.
Meanwhle, DRJ Wellness beat Toby’s to secure a spot in the semifinal round.
Missing the services of their topscoring point guard, Renren Lacson, DRJ Wellness relied on their bigmen for the much needed points.
Joval Medina, Chac Mirano, and Popoy Jamero bullied their way down low to give DRJ a 5-point halftime lead. Toby’s Nikol Medina kept his team afloat by scoring 7 points in the third quarter to tie the game at 37-all going into the final canto.
Paolo Avecila and Mark Jomalesa then used their speed to counter the bigger but much slower DRJ team as they kept Toby’s within striking distance.
Facing a 5-point deficit with a minute remaining, Marvin Tan launched a 3-pointer from way downtown as DRJ’s lead was cut to two points with 50 seconds remaining.
As DRJ missed four crucial free throws down the stretch, Toby’s were also not making their opportunities count. After an intentional foul, Mirano sank two pressure packed free throws to seal the win.
Jamero and Mirano both had 18 points to lead DRJ Wellness while Medina added 13 of his own. Avecila top scored for Toby’s with 13 while Tan, Jake De la Paz, and Jonart Versoza combined for 26 points.*
