Distrito urges Mayor to
convene Sports body

Bacolod Councilor Caesar Distrito yesterday said he is proposing a resolution reiterating their request to Mayor Monico Puentevella to convene the Bacolod City Sports Development Council.

Distrito said City Ordinance 568, series of 2011, provides for the creation of the Bacolod City Sports Development Council that will determine the future direction of the Sports Council, that will be reflected in short, medium and long-term sports development plan of the City of Bacolod.

The resolution said the Sports Development Council will serve as the implementing arm of the city in realizing the objectives of the ordinance mainly in creating programs that will encourage citizens particularly those who are inclined to sports to train for purposes of competing in the local, national and international competitions and will prioritize grassroots sports development programs, as a way of discovering potential athletes.

City Ordinance No. 568 had already enumerated several programs such as the Palarong Pambarangay, Palarong Panlungsod and the Citywide Sportsfest intended for Persons with Disability. It had also provided other programs such as the Adopt an Athlete Program and the creation also of the Bacolod Sports Advisory Body that will serve as the advisory body of the City's Sports Development Council, the resolution said.

The resolution said the increasing youth involvement in crimes, vices and other ill practices will be mitigated and, hopefully, be stopped in the long run, if the city through the Sports Development Committee can keep the young people involved in sports programs implemented in the barangays.*CGS
