Pacquiao joins PBA as
KIA head coach

Philippine icon and eight-division boxing world champion Manny Pacquiao was publicly introduced yesterday as head coach of Team Kia, the latest addition to the teams playing in the Philippine Basketball Association.

In a press conference in Manila, Pacquiao said he loves basketball first before embracing boxing and this is the main reason why he is joining the PBA.

Happy to be appointed as head coach of Team Kia, Pacquiao said he will prove that he also has  skills in basketball and he will not let his team down.

He said his duties as congressman of Sarangani and his boxing commitments will not get in the way of his new tasks as basketball coach. All it would take, he said, is time management and self discipline.

As head coach, Pacquiao said his focus is on getting good players to create a good team for Kia.

Reports from the wires said the boxing champ was present during the tryouts for Team KIA last week and while he already tapped some players into the team, the roster is still incomplete. Pacquiao hopes to get some players from the PBA draft this year.

When asked how he would fare as head coach with the likes of Norman Black, Tim Cone and other PBA bench strategists, Pacquiao said he will put more emphasis on stopping the Class A players of the other team from scoring by playing good defense.

A mix of basketball training, boxing training, and plyometrics, he said, will make the members of the Team Kia better.*NAB
