The Department of Science and Technology granted funding assistance of P860,000 to two small business groups in Negros Oriental to upgrade their processing technologies, a government press release said.

Roslyn Tambago of DOST said Vegidri Mills in Valencia, Negros Oriental, and Algorithm Computer Services in Dumaguete City received P650,000 and P210,000, respectively.

Vegidri Mills is the latest recipient of the financial support for the technology upgrading of its food supplement production of export-quality dried Moringa (Malunggay) flakes and powder. It is set to acquire Dry Moringa Leaf Pulverizing Grinding Machine for faster and efficient production of goods.

Company owner and general manager Florante Vicuña received the fund from provincial Science and Technology director Gilbert Arbon recently, the press release said.

Meanwhile, Algorithm Computer Services received funding support to procure a brand new F8 Infrared BGA Rework and Desoldering Station, through the DOST Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program.

The equipment, which can repair large circuit boards such as the main boards of a computer, game machines, mobile devices and other communications equipment, are expected to boost the firm’s troubleshooting service capabilities for computer, communications and related electronics devices, Tambago said.

Most firms are using either outdated or inadequate processing equipment, thus, the firms need to upgrade its existing technology to improve efficiency and enhance product quality, thereby attracting more customers and becoming more competitive, Arbon said.

DOST-SETUP is a nationwide strategy encouraging and assisting micro, small and medium enterprises to adopt technological innovations to improve their products, services, and operations, and increase their productivity and competitiveness.

The project enables small firms to fully address their technical problems and improve efficiency by infusing appropriate technologies, human resource training, and consultancy services, which are considered to be invaluable tools for the success of every business, the press release said.

DOST is encouraging more MSMEs to avail of the SETUP, and interested individuals may visit its office in Daro, Dumaguete City, the press release added.*
