SJI spikers retain crown in
NOPSSCEA Aspirants

The St. John’s Institute girls’ volleyball Aspirants team completed its conquest of Bacolod Tay Tung High School with straight sets victory, 25-22, 25-22, Saturday in their final encounter at the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court.

Mentored by Peter Yusay, the SJI girls erased the twice-to-beat advantage of BTTHS with a masterful 25-14, 25-20 victory in their first meeting for the championship then sealed the win during the playoff match Saturday to retain their NOPSSCEA title.

After taking the first set, the SJI girls found themselves trailing BTTHS, 22-17, in the second set.

With team captain and setter Angelica Sy executing perfect serves, SJI mounted an error-free comeback to wipe out Tay Tung’s five-point lead and take the set and successfully defend their crown.

Joining Sy in the lineup of the back-to-back champion team are Natasha Escares, Faye Ruth de Lumen, Marixi Maliduat, Nicole Jison and Josie Ortega.

Meanwhile, the Silay City-based St. Francis of Assisi School settled for the third place honors while Living Stone International School placed fourth.*NAB
