Only 16.28 percent of those who joined the jobs fair in Western Visayas provinces Thursday were hired on the spot, an official of the Department of Labor in Employment in the Region said yesterday.
Out of 2,205 job applicants only 359 were hired on the spot, DOLE Region 6 Director Ponciano Ligutom said.
Ligutom also said 5,130 applicants were scheduled for further interview, while 67 qualified to undergo training at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
He said there were 5,233 applicants from the region who joined the pre-registration last week but only 2,205 matched with the job vacancies in the participating companies.
DOLE Region 6 records showed that there were 50,000 job vacancies offered during the fair, 40,000 of them for foreign employment and the rest for local work placements.
Ligutom said that among the jobs offered for foreign employment are for barbers, welders, household workers, electricians, carpenters, architectural helpers, grinders, nurses, health workers and security guards.
As local employment, there are vacancies for community facilitators for government agencies, accounting clerks, kitchen personnel, drivers, customer service representatives, promo merchandisers and barristas, he said.
In Negros Occidental, 169 job applicants out of 2,383 were hired on the spot by 65 local firms and international recruitment agencies.
Ligutom said he noted that there were more qualified job applicants this year than in previous years.*APN
