Banago port hearing set

A joint committee hearing on the resolution passed by the Bacolod City Development Council favorably endorsing to the Sangguniang Panlungsod the proposed port zone delineation of the port of Banago, will be conducted by the SP Committees on Laws, Urban Planning and Government Assets.

Bacolod Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya said yesterday that this is line with the development plans of the Philippine Ports Authority for the Banago port.

The CDC had passed on June 6 Resolution No. 1, Series of 2014, that favorably endorses to the SP the proposed port zone delineation of the port of Banago and the development plans of the Philippine Ports Authority for the Banago Port.

The CDC resolution was submitted by the mayor to the SP for approval on Sept. 29.

The resolution said the proposed Port Zone Delineation will constitute an area equivalent to a total of 2,108,572 square meters for navigational and operational purposes.

The development of Banago Port will serve as a vital link for the efficient movement of goods and services, not only in Bacolod Cityand its adjacent areas but throughout the country as well, and help propel Bacolod City’s economic activities, the resolution said.

Meanwhile, Distrito, chairman of the SP Committee on Government Assets, earlier said a lot of factors have to be considered first, before the port delineation can be approved by the SP.

There are some questions as to why the port development is necessary before the P420-million port development is implemented and why it will consist of 21 hectares and not the finger port alone, he said.

A public hearing will also be conducted to hear the side of the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corporation, the present operator of the city port, especially on the letter of its president, Simplicio Palanca, questioning the delineation and the opening of the Banago Port, he said.

The Barangay Council of Banago had also passed a resolution requesting for a hearing on their concerns and fears about the effect of the CDC action on port delineation on Banago residents, Distrito added.*CGS
