About 7,000 teachers from regions 6, 7 and 8 will be honored at a national Teachers’ Day celebration at the Victorias Sports and Amusement Center in Victorias City 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, Dr. Juliet Jeruta, Negros Occidental Schools Division superintendent, said.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro and Senate President Franklin Drilon are expected at the affair, with Negros Occidental. Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) and Victorias Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca and showbiz personalities, courtesy of Benitez, she said.
To be discussed at the affair are the welfare and benefits of teachers, she also said.
Jeruta said there is need to provide higher compensation for teachers, who have masters and doctorate degrees.
Under the current set-up, higher educational attainment is a factor considered for promotion, but not for higher compensation, she said.
That means teachers with masters and doctorate degrees enter the school system with the same basic pay of P18,500, she said.*CPG
