The chairman of the Dacongcogon Farmers Cooperative, said in a press release that he wrote to President Benigno Aquino, through the Office of the Presidential Management Staff and the Undersecretary on Presidential Engagements, urging him to include the Dacongcogon sugar mill site at Brgy. Tabugon, Kabankalan City in his visit to Negros Occidental.
Rolando Parpa said that since June 30, 2010, the Cooperative had sought the help of Aquino to restore operation of the Dacongcogon sugar mill but to no avail, the press release said.
He said the closure of the sugar mill caused the poverty situation and rise of insurgency in the area, and has created a climate of fear, and also exposed hinterland residents to the crossfire between the military and rebels.
He said Aquino would accomplish more in his trip, if he visits the Dacongcogon sugar mill in southern Negros, the press release said.
The Dacongcogon people’s organization is appealing to him to give due course to their southern Negros hinterland development proposal to lift them out of poverty and harm’s way, and provide parameters for discussion in localized peace talks between government and rebels, the press release added.*
