USLS coed MassKara Queen

Christine Joy Madamba , 19, of the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City, won the 2014 MassKara Queen title besting 10 other candidates during the pageant at the USLS Coliseum last night.

First runner-up was Riah Angelica De Ocampo, 19, of La Consolacion Bacolod, and second runner-up was Raxel Ann Gonzales, 19, of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

Madamba, a Management Accounting and Business Economics student, won P75,000 in cash plus P25,000 worth of prizes from corporate sponsors and P25,000 in cash for her advocacy projects. She also won a round-trip ticket from Philippine Airlines and gift check from Karat World and other corporate sponsors.

Madamba won as Miss Photogenic, Best in Gown, Miss SuperCat and Texter’s Choice awards and Miss Karat World.

She also won as Miss Ceres and Miss Advocacy and will also get three perpetual crowns designed by John de la Vega that will be transferred every year to the winners.

Madamba also won as Miss Grand Bacolod and will represent the city in the 2015 Miss Grand Philippines.

She said this is the first time she has joined a beauty pageant and she hopes to fulfill the responsibilities of a MassKara Queen. She did not expect to win because it was a stiff competition but by God’s grace and in God’s time she won, she added.

Madamba said she would like to return to the Bacolod Girl’s Home, her chosen advocacy, and share her success because they were part of her winning the MassKara Queen title. She wants to know how else she could be of assistance to the organization and to other women’s group, Madamba said.

For the first time, the judges had to break a tie between two candidates by asking the top seven runners-up to answer the question “If you were crowned MassKara Queen, how would you help your fellow Bacolodnons?”

But the announcement of the winner of the MassKara Queen title, however, was met with boos from the audience who were expecting De Ocampo to win after having garnered the most number of awards.

De Ocampo, a B.S. Tourism Management student of LCC, won P50,000 in cash as first runner-up, as well as, several other awards such as Best in Festival Costume, Best in Swimwear, Best in Talent, Miss PAL, Miss Petron, Miss Merzci, Miss Ysa Skin and Body Expert, Miss 2Go Travel, Miss District North Point, and Miss GMA Kapuso.

Gonzales, a BSED English student of UNO-R, won P30,000 in cash as second runner-up and also won as Miss Advocacy together with Madamba.

MassKara Queen 2013 Lady Ann Alquizar made her final walk, while the candidates were serenaded by GMA Kapuso heartthrob Christopher Martin.

Mayor Monico Puentevella said this is a competition and only one has to win the crown. It was a very close fight and now that they have won, he hopes they will really implement their advocacies and represent Bacolod.

Meanwhile, Cate Antoinette Pirote won as Miss Congeniality, Arriana Demi Montealegre won as Ysa Botanica and Pepsi Choice award, Sheen Liberty Cuenza who won as Miss Glutamax and Yosi Samra.

Other candidates were Kristine Kaye Necir, Sweetzel Lima, Melresa Tiu and Jilian Tsukada.

Also present were Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya, Councilors Alex Paglumotan, Sonya Verdeflor, Noli Villarosa, Abang Lingkod Rep. Stephen Paduano, former MassKara Queens Altea Mauricio and Jan Nicole Puentevella.*CGS
