After four presidents and a lobby that lasted for 21 years, President Benigno Aquino III fulfilled the dream of Negrenses by signing Executive Order No. 183, creating the Negros Island Region.
The NIR will be the 18 th region of the country.
Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon, a principal mover for its creation, said Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas informed him yesterday that the president signed Executive Order No. 183 on May 29, creating the NIR composed of Negros Oriental, that was formerly under Central Visayas, and Negros Occidental, formerly under Western Visayas.

Embattled and dismissed general manager Sulpicio Lagarde Jr. of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative yesterday asked the Ceneco Board to rescind the contract of Filinvest Development Corp. to stop the alleged unfair charges it is passing on to the consumers.
In his letter to the Ceneco Board, dated May 27 Lagarde claimed that the power supply contracts signed by Ceneco president Arnel Lapore with Filinvest for 20MW last year, on top of the additional 24MW with Kepco earlier, are improper.
